Description

Brief Product Description

The Allen-Bradley 1756-RIO is a versatile communication interface that bridges ControlLogix controllers with legacy Remote I/O networks. This module enables seamless data exchange between modern processors and up to 32 physical adapters, supporting both scanner and adapter configurations.

Product Description

Legacy Network Integration

The Allen-Bradley 1756-RIO facilitates the modernization of industrial control systems by connecting high-speed ControlLogix processors to established Remote I/O (RIO) networks. It serves as a critical gateway, allowing users to maintain existing I/O infrastructure while upgrading their primary controller. Because this module manages digital, analog, and specialty data without requiring complex message instructions, it streamlines the system architecture. Furthermore, it supports all standard RIO baud rates and flexible rack configurations, ensuring compatibility with a wide array of legacy hardware.

Dual-Mode Operational Flexibility

This module offers significant versatility through its ability to function as either a scanner or an adapter. In scanner mode—the factory default setting—the 1756-RIO actively manages the network by executing regular block transfers across all locations. Conversely, when configured in adapter mode, it allows the ControlLogix chassis to behave as a remote station for a different supervisor. This dual-functionality proves essential for complex plant topologies where distributed control and data sharing between different PLC generations are required.

Hardware Reliability and Power Efficiency

Engineering for the 1756-RIO focuses on long-term stability and electrical protection. The module provides 50V continuous isolation between the backplane and the RIO communication lines, effectively shielding the processor from network-borne electrical noise. It installs into any available slot within a standard 1756 chassis (A4 through A17) and draws a combined current from the backplane of 450 mA at 5.1V DC and 5 mA at 24V DC. Consequently, the low thermal dissipation of 2.5 Watts makes it an efficient addition to high-density control cabinets. Connection to the network is established via standard 1771-CD or Belden 9463 “Blue Hose” cabling, maintaining the integrity of the physical layer.
